Basic Facts about Rexulti (Brexpiprazole)

Brexpiprazole, brand names: Rexulti®

  • Class of medications called atypical antipsychotic
  • Comes in a tablet to be taken by mouth once a day

REXULTI is a prescription medicine used along with antidepressant medicines to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.

It is not known if REXULTI is safe and effective in children with MDD.

Possible side effects of Rexulti (Brexpiprazole):

  • headache
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • heartburn
  • increased appetite
  • tiredness
  • uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
  • dizziness, feeling unsteady, or having trouble keeping your balance

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your healthcare provider immediately:

  • rash
  • hives
  • itching
  • swelling of the eyes, face, mouth, lips, tongue, throat, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • seizures
  • shortness of breath
  • sore throat, cough, fever, chills, difficult or painful urination, or other signs of infection
  • fever, sweating, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, and severe muscle stiffness
  • unusual movements of your face or body that you cannot control
  • falling
  • tightening of the neck muscles or throat

Rexulti (Brexpiprazole) may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

Important Warning

(as per Medication Guide)
  • Increased risk of death in elderly people with dementia-related psychosis. Medicines like REXULTI can raise the risk of death in elderly people who have lost touch with reality (psychosis) due to confusion and memory loss (dementia). REXULTI is not approved for the treatment of people with dementia-related
    psychosis without agitation that may happen with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and actions. REXULTI and antidepressant medicines increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions in people 24 years of age and younger, especially within the first few months of treatment or when the dose is changed.

Special precautions to know before taking Brexpiprazole

  • Know list of ingredients for potential allergic reactions
  • Discuss all medications you are currently on or have recently stopped with your health care provider
  • Be aware that nonprescription and herbal products may have interactions, included St. John’s wort
  • Tell your health care provider regarding any health problems you have or had in the past
  • Inform your health care provider of any heart conditions current or past
  • Notify your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant or breast feeding
  • You may become drowsy and may affect your ability to think clearly and react quickly
  • Do not drive or operate hazardous machinery and take precautions to avoid falls until you know how this medication affects you
  • This medication may increase your blood sugar
  • It may become harder for your body to cool down
  • Increased weight gain may occur
Some people may develop gambling problems or other intense urges or behaviors that are compulsive or unusual for them, such as increased sexual urges or behaviors, excessive shopping, and binge eating when taking Brexpiprazole.
