Reaching Out For Help

May 23, 2024 by Nikki and Anne Heart

Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.

reaching for hope

Awareness is important when reaching for help

While my daughter began her first year of college, she desperately reached out for help.

Unfortunately, in my haste to get her the help she needed, I accepted the advice given without question. And because of my daughter’s trust in me, she willingly followed the direction I lead her to.

This direction was a prescription treatment plan which we were told was the appropriate treatment course for my daughter’s mental health.

Prior to this, I objected to my daughter taking prescription medication for her mental health, since I never received a truthful reason why she needed a drug treatment plan during her pre-teen years.

The conversations with counselors at this time were always the same, “This drug will help Nikki”. But she was never given a clear-cut diagnosis nor was she ever tested for any underlying conditions.

When Nikki did follow the protocol drug treatment plan, it was still the same — no specific diagnosis was given nor any testing for underlying conditions were done.

Knowledge is an important key when reaching out.

Recognizing everyone is different is an important part of any treatment plan.

Sadly, the protocol drug treatment plan doesn’t always recognize this individuality.

Some people have chemical sensitivities, like my daughter Nikki, which can affect their physical and mental health.

During the time my daughter was prescribed mental health medication, she often had negative reactions. However, no one ever recognized that there may be an underlying problem. The medical community often looked at her as though it was all in her head.

My daughter didn’t only have negative reactions from mental health medications, she also had it with thyroid hormone replacement medication as well. Similarly, the medical community didn’t recognize this.

Question When you Reach Out for Help

  1. Has anything happened in your life that can cause your mental health symptoms?
  2. Are you eating healthy?
  3. Did you recently change your diet?
  4. Can the medications/supplements/vitamins you are taking, prescribed or over the counter, be affecting you?
  5. Do strong smells cause you to feel a mental or physical change?
  6. Does lotions, creams, perfumes, etc. make you feel mentally or physically unwell?

These are just a few things that can be triggers for your wellbeing.

An important key is to look at yourself closely so you can truly determine what is causing or contributing to your unwellness.

Reaching out for help is important.

Remember, to look at yourself closely so you can truly determine what is causing or contributing to your unwellness.

Furthermore, make sure this observation is taken into consideration with any treatment plan.
