Reaching for Hope
By Nikki and Anne Heart ♥ August 21, 2025
*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.
Mom's Story: Journey for Hope
When someone close to you is in pain, you hope for a magic cure to help. But most of the time, there is no magic cure especially when it comes to mental illness.
Years of loss hope.
Watching my daughter struggle for years under a prescription drug treatment program was heartbreaking. As time went on, I could see the hope in her eyes slowly fading away as her body and mind continued to deteriorate.
I’ll be honest—there were many moments when I felt that same hopelessness. I wanted to believe things would get better, but the weight of uncertainty was heavy. Still, I knew I had to be strong for her. Trying to portray a confidence that help would be found, I dug deep within myself to offer her encouragement she needed to hold on while I cried silent tears.
It was Nikki’s own courage that changed everything. She made the brave decision to take charge of her own health. She knew that her survival depended on following a new treatment plan.
With me, her father, and her boyfriend (now husband) by her side, she stepped forward and took control of her health. The journey was far from easy. She endured over a year of severe withdrawals. Yet every day she reached for hope, fighting through the pain and pushing forward.
Reaching for hope.
It’s been years since Nikki went through her withdrawal, and while she has come a long way, I wish I could say the same for the healthcare system. Sadly, not much has changed when it comes to how mental illness is looked at and the treatment.
People are still reaching for hope—just like Nikki once did and still does. The same barriers still exist today: inadequate care, lack of understanding, and the heavy weight of stigma. It’s disheartening to see how often individuals are reduced to a diagnosis instead of being seen as whole people with unique stories and needs.
One of the biggest challenges is shifting the mindset. Mental illness isn’t something you “fix” with a quick solution. And when someone doesn’t improve right away, it’s not because they aren’t trying hard enough. That kind of thinking only deepens the shame and isolation.
The truth is, healing from mental illness is a lifelong journey. It’s filled with ups and downs, progress and setbacks. What people need most is compassion, patience, and support—not judgment or unrealistic expectations.
Finding hope.
When health professionals rush to label and prescribe, at first it can feel like a lifeline—until that lifeline fails. A hasty diagnosis paired with a quick fix often sparks false hope. And when that hope proves unfounded, it doesn’t just fade—it collapses, leaving the individual more hopeless than before.
Real hope, especially in the realm of mental health, isn’t found in shortcuts. It’s cultivated through thoughtful, appropriate care—care that sees the whole person, not just the symptoms. Only then can healing truthfully begin.
So, what steps need to me taken.
First, there needs to be a correct diagnosis
Many things contribute to mental health unwellness, such as thyroid disease, food, chemicals, preservatives, etc.
Appropriate testing must be done to insure a correct diagnosis. These tests include:
- Thyroid levels
- Patch, skin and blood testing can help diagnosis allergic reactions to such things as propylene glycol, nickel, mercury, gluten, etc.
- Testing for any suspected underlying conditions
Diet can play an important part when it comes to your mental health. Unfortunately, no tests exist at this time to determine adverse reactions. Awareness is key.
Chemicals and smells can also contribute to your mental health such as perfumes, bleach, paint, etc. Again, awareness is key here to your individual reactions.
Second, a correct treatment plan for the individual
- A treatment plan must br individualized. One plan doesn’t fit all.
- The correct treatment plan should consist of a complete self-help plan which includes self-care, healthy diet, and managing techniques.
Awareness for hope.
It’s essential to understand that mental health struggles aren’t just emotional—they manifest as real, physical and psychological pain. And no two individuals experience that pain in the same way. Each person deserves to be seen as a whole, not as a diagnosis or a checklist.
Prescribing a medication might help some, but it’s not a universal solution. There are no magic cocktails, no quick fixes when it comes to mental wellness. Healing is a lifelong commitment—one that requires patience, compassion, and a personalized approach.
Insurance companies must step up and provide meaningful coverage for mental health treatment. And healthcare providers need to advocate for their patients by working with insurers to ensure continuity of care. Because without a consistent, long-term treatment plan, relapse isn’t just possible—it’s likely.
Mental wellness isn’t a destination. It’s a journey. And that journey deserves the same respect, resources, and attention as any other aspect of healthcare.
