Prescription for Thought

February 22, 2024 by Nikki and Anne Heart  Mom’s Story: Prescription for Thought

Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through Mom’s eyes.

multiple drugs

When there are multiple prescription medications to treat an ailment, what decides which one is prescribed?

During the first few years of my daughter’s, Nikki, prescription drug treatment program, her healthcare provider was a nurse practioner.

It was at this time the nurse practioner frequently gave free samples initially of the drug she prescribed to Nikki.

On the surface this doesn’t seem to be a problem. Something free is always a positive thing, right?

However, what plays in my mind is the huge number of free samples she had in her office of a particular drug she would prescribe to my daughter.

My awareness now brings attention to this and the pattern of her prescribing treatment plan–she always stayed in the same circle of drugs.

Learning more over the years, I have become aware of how kickbacks are used in the distribution of prescription drugs.

Now, I can’t help but question whether or not this was the main factor in my daughter’s prescription drug treatment plan.

Another questionable experience regarding prescribing a medication.

Recently, I had to take my daughter to the emergency room due to severe pain she was having in her stomach.

Arriving at the hospital’s emergency room, she was briefly evaluated in the triage.

Due to the severity of her pain, they stated they would put her into an emergency private room and administer morphine, prior to a doctors examine.

We informed the triage nurse of my daughter’s sensitivities, and stated she couldn’t take morphine. Because of this, they sent her back to the waiting room, where she vomited several times from the pain and waited for hours.

When finally admitted into the emergency room, she continued in excruciating pain for hours more without a diagnosis.

My daughter’s pain intensified to the point it was intolerable. At this point, she requested a simple Motrin pill. Unfortunately, it took a couple of hours to receive the Motrin.  Hindsight to the fact, it would have taken only minutes to be administered morphine.

Shortly after taking the Motrin, the pain subsided. She was diagnosed with a passing kidney stone and was released soon after.

Nikki was in the ER for a total of fourteen hours, thirteen of which she was in severe pain basically because she refused morphine.

Questions to think about when being prescribed a prescription medication:

  • Am I on the best treatment program
  • Are the decisions for my treatment in the best interest for me
  • Is the prescribed drug the right one for me
  • Do I need such a powerful drug
  • What are all my options for medication, if necessary
  • Why do I need to take more than one medication
  • Shouldn't I have someone to be my advocate
  • Are kickbacks* playing a part in my prescription drug treatment
