*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.
What are Prescription Digital Therapeutics (PDTs)?
PDTs are software-based treatments used to help prevent, manage, or treat mental or physical conditions.
They are prescribed by a healthcare provider and FDA-authorized through the same process as medications and other medical devices.
Information is delivered to the patient through mobile devices.
To date, a PDT is used to treat conditions such as substance use disorders, attention-deficit disorder, chronic insomnia and post-traumatic stress disorder.
With a rise in substance abuse disorder, a lack of healthcare providers to provide adequate and timely treatment has existed. PDTs can possibly fill this void.
Like most people, I am new to this type of treatment.
Does it work?
It seems that it can possibly fill in where our healthcare lacks.
I do question the possible lack of personalized treatment. Is there enough human-to-human interaction?
Our current healthcare system has lacked the personalized treatment for some time, and I can see the potential for this type of treatment adding to the problem.
But I also see the potential to fulfill areas that are in need especially in the treatment of mental health disorders.
Having a system in place which can provide an immediate reinforcement of techniques and practices involving programs such as DBT, CBT, mindfulness, and self-care is without a doubt very beneficial.
In summary, Prescription Digital Therapeutics (PDTs) are:
Software based applications that are delivered on mobile devices
U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved
Prescribed by a healthcare provider
Use to prevent or manage mental or physical conditions
