This week we continue our journey through Nikki’s healthcare treatment discussing the prescription drug, Gabapentin. Even though this journey lasted a very short time, the knowledge we provide you is significant to your wellness journey.

Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through Nikki’s eyes.

Nikki’s Story:

Journey through Gabapentin

I was already going into my fifth year on a prescription drug treatment plan when I was prescribed Gabapentin.

With my mental and physical health deteriorating, it seemed like an eternity since I began my journey for wellness at the beginning of 2010, my first year of college.

In hopes of a better outcome, I switched to my third healthcare prescriber. He once again continued to follow the same drug regime plan which included keeping me on the two medications considered to be the base of my treatment, Lithium and Abilify

After introducing me to Klonopin and Valium with no positive success, he prescribed Gabapentin (Neurotin).

When I took Gabapentin in capsule form, I was instructed to open the 100 mg capsule and take a 1/4 of the powder daily.

Truly feeling like a drug addict now, I tried each day to take an equal amount of Gabapentin. It was literally impossible to get the same daily dose. On some days I felt high while others I felt sick.

After only three months on Gabapentin, it left me feeling again with little hope.

Questions that need to be answered with taking Gabapentin or any other drug prescription:

  • Is the current medication(s) I am on having more positive or negative effects?
  • Should I withdraw from the drugs which are not working?
  • Can I open a capsule and take an accurate dose?
  • Is opening the capsule recommended by the medication guidelines?
  • Even if the tablet is scored, should I cut the pill?
  • Will the pill have the same affect if I alter it in anyway?
  • What is the feasibility of cutting a pill less than half and still obtain an exact dose?

Be Aware when taking Gabapentin or another prescription drug:

  • Recognize any changes in your symptoms after taking a prescribed drug both positive and negative.
  • Are you experiencing more positive or negative results from the prescribed drug?
  • Understand everyone is different.
  • There are no quick fixes.
  • Living a happy and healthy lifestyle may be a lifelong commitment, but not necessarily life consuming.
