Medication ♥ Nikki’s Story

November 16, 2023 by Nikki and Anne Heart  ♥ Nikki’s Story: Journey through Effexor

This week we continue our journey through another prescription drug, Effexor. Even though this journey lasted a very short time, the knowledge we provide you is significant to your wellness journey.

Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through Nikki’s eyes.

Nikki’s Story:

Journey through Effexor

In spring of 2013, I was prescribed another new drug, Effexor, which was added to my current three medications.

Having a new healthcare provider, I once again had confidence in her ability to find the right drug treatment plan for my wellness.

Experiencing severe side effects from the SSRIs previously prescribed to me, a new class of medication was now introduced to my treatment plan, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI).

Convincingly, my healthcare provider expressed how Effexor would be the right drug for me.

My provider noted that I was just very sensitive to medications, and I needed to take a very small dosage for it to work without negative effects.

She instructed me to open the capsule and take out some of the beads.

To make my dosage consistent, I literally counted out five beads for my daily dosage.

For the month of May, I continued on this path until I no longer could take the physical and mental pain.

At the beginning of June, my healthcare provider stopped prescribing Effexor and instead prescribed a new drug, Zyprexa.

Looking back at this time, I can relate my treatment plan to a game of roulette — drug roulette.

Tips for Awareness Regarding Your Prescription Treatment Plan:
Number 1:
I currently was on Lithium, Abilify and Wellbutrin as well as allergy medication at the time I was prescribed Effexor.

Even though both my healthcare provider and pharmacist were aware of this, I was still prescribed Effexor.

Over the years, I have found research indicating that Lithium, Abilify and Wellbutrin as well as allergy medications can have interactions with Effexor.

  • Always check yourself for any drug interactions.
  • Even if a reaction is listed as something minor, it may affect you differently.
  • Also be aware that facts on prescription drugs change.
Number 2:

My healthcare provider had me open the capsule and take only five beads for my daily dosage.

What I didn’t know at the time is that Effexor if opened must be taken in its entirety.

  • Even if a capsule can be opened, verify that only a small part can be taken.
  • Verify if you can alter the pill in anyway.
Number 3:

If you are having severe reactions to the prescription drugs, question why.

Multiple times I was told that I was just overly sensitive, or the right cocktail had to be found.

  • Do you have a chemical sensitivity to possible preservatives or artificial ingredients?
  • Do you have a hidden illness such as thyroid disease or a gluten problem?
