Journey through Chasteberry
April 4, 2024 by Nikki and Anne Heart ♥ Nikki’s Story: Journey through Chasteberry
Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through Mom’s eyes.
Mom’s Story:
Journey through Chasteberry
After five years of an unsuccessful mental health drug treatment program, my daughter was encouraged at this time to take the dietary supplement Chasteberry Vitex.
We had very little knowledge regarding supplements, only that it could help make her feel better or do nothing at all. My daughter’s health care provider indicated that a Chasteberry supplement can help premenstrual symptoms thereby stabilizing her mood. With this, my daughter, Nikki, decided to give it a try.
The directions my daughter was given by her health care provider was to purchase Chasteberry Vitex Supplement capsules and open a capsule, taking a little from the capsule daily.
Each time Nikki took the Chasteberry supplement, she became extremely buzzed from it. Since the buzz was very extreme and my daughter didn’t feel any positive effects from it, she stopped taking the Chasteberry supplement after a month.
What you need to know about dietary supplements:
Federal Regulation of Dietary Supplements
- Dietary supplements are products intended to supplement the diet.
- They are not medicines and are not intended to treat, diagnose, mitigate, prevent, or cure diseases.
- FDA is the federal agency that oversees both supplements and medicines, but FDA regulations for dietary supplements are different from those for prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
How are the regulations different:
- Medicines must be approved by FDA before they can be sold or marketed.
- Supplements do not require this approval.
- Supplement companies are responsible for having evidence that their products are safe, and the label claims are truthful and not misleading.
- However, as long as the product does not contain a new dietary ingredient (one introduced since October 15, 1994), the company does not have to provide this safety evidence to FDA before the product is marketed.
