Nikki's Story:
Journey into Prescription Drugs
July 14, 2023 by Nikki and Anne Heart
Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following story through Nikki’s experience.
Mental Illness and Prescription Drugs
Since I was a little girl, I always heard stories of family members struggling with mental illness and being treated with prescription drugs.
I nor my parents knew all the details of my family regarding mental illness.
We never heard any diagnosis. So, whether or not a family member had one is uncertain.
My first year of college is when I began to reach out for help regarding my own depression.
During my first counseling session, my mother discussed our family history thinking it was all clearcut.
She openly discussed aunts, uncles, grandparents, who were treated with psychiatric medication, some being institutionalized or hospitalized as well as mentioning those who committed suicide.
This was all stated as a matter of fact, but in reality, there were no facts.
Yes, family members did take psychiatric prescription drugs. But why.
This is a question I often wish I had answers to.
My great aunt was a family member who was treated for mental illness for many years with prescription drugs.
She was born one of seven children.
After her dad died, her mother (my great grandmother) was left raising the children by herself during the great depression.
With little money and resources, my great aunt was sent to be raised by her mother’s sister.
Even though it was family, it naturally would be a traumatic experience for any child.
During the last few years of my great aunt’s life, she took the sole responsibility of taking care of her husband who was confined to a wheelchair.
My great aunt was on medication, in and out of the hospital for suicide attempts and while in the hospital received what was then known as shock treatment.
Soon after being released from the hospital, my great aunt tried to kill herself. This pattern continued for years.
I remember visiting her in the hospital. She would come outside when we were there. Happy to see us and always saying she just wanted to go home.
I was too young to know all the details and unfortunately my mom didn’t know either.
So, why tell this story.
Obviously, she had many reasons for being depressed.
I often wonder if any of these reasons were discussed by her medical team and other options for treatment were considered.
The treatment my great aunt received apparently didn’t work.
She went from weeks of hospital care to be released with the same depressed and suicidal thoughts.
Was there ever a different treatment approach discussed?
Could there have been a better treatment option?
I wish I had the answers to these questions.
Like my great aunt, other relatives in my family received the same protocol treatment.
Some unfortunately did not live an independent, happy lifestyle.
My journey began the same way my relatives path lead them.
When I first reached out for help, the only treatment plan discussed with me was prescription drugs.
It took me seven years to realize this was the wrong treatment for me.
In fact, the prescribed drugs took away years of my life with no medical professional ever considering an alternative treatment.
Even though I was both physically and mentally deteriorating, no professional ever suggested anything other than prescription drugs.
Through my journey into prescription drugs, I have realized that my family history could have had a different outcome.
I have recognized through conversations with my mother, that many circumstances leading to family members mental health difficulties could have played a role.
And very possibly never discussed or considered.
Was their thyroid overlooked like mine was?
Did they have food sensitivities similar to mine that can affect their mental and physical being?
Could have counseling and self-help techniques help them cope with situations?
I will never know the answers to these and many more questions.
There, of course, are times when a medication treatment plan can be the correct treatment path to take.
But I also know for a fact, it isn’t the correct path for everyone.
What is your correct path?
The goal for each and every one of my stories is to help you get the answers to find your correct path.
So, you too can begin to lead a happy and healthier lifestyle.
