Moving Forward

Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through Mom’s eyes.

The difficulty with moving forward

Moving forward and leaving the past behind is often a difficult concept to achieve.

Especially when the world around us insists you can and should just shake it off.

Getting stuck moving forward.

It is easy to get stuck and to not be able to move forward especially if we are surrounded by negativity.

The negativity can be caused by low self-esteem or from the demons in our past.

It can be caused by loss of hope or fear of what the future holds.

Negativity can also come from others around us who don’t know or understand what we are going through presently or what we went through in our past.

How to move forward:

Number 1:
  • Believe in yourself.
Number 2:
  • Don’t compare yourself to others.

a. Someone will know more while others will know less than you.

b. Someone will have more while others will have less than you.

c. Someone will be bigger while others will be smaller than you.

d. Someone will write better, do math quicker, run faster while others won’t.

And that’s OK.

Because we all can’t be as smart as Albert Einstein or as successful as Bill Gates, but we can be who we can be!

Number 3:
  • Don’t consume yourself with “what if”.

Of course, there are times you should question whether or not you are taking the right path for yourself.

The key is to not get consumed about the “what ifs.” No one can predict the future.

Number 4:

It can be difficult to look back at past events and say if this didn’t happen, I can be…

This of course can be very true.

But if you get stuck in the past, it may deter you from having a future.

So even though something happened in your past that you may never forget or forgive, it is OK.

However, you don’t want your past to take over your future as well.

Take the time needed to heal. Hopefully you can gain the strength to move forward.

Number 5:
  • Small steps are still steps forward.

Yes, the little things matter.

  • If today is the day you got out of bed, pat yourself on the back.
  • If you take a step outside, say hurray I did it.
  • If you apply for a job, congratulate yourself for trying.
  • If you try something new, good for you.
  • If you decide to take charge of your wellness, be proud of yourself.

In summary:

I know through my daughter, Nikki, how difficult moving forward can be. Nikki lost many years of her life through an inadequate prescription drug treatment plan. Precious years she can never get back.

Even though it is difficult not to be stuck in the blame, we realize how important it is to move forward from what happened.

Each day can bring new challenges. People who challenge you by their opinions, by their attitude, and by their naiveté.

Just believe in yourself and this will help you move forward.
