Mom's Story:

Journey via Prescription Drugs (Part 2)

August 4, 2023 by Nikki and Anne Heart

Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following story through Mom’s experience.

Symptoms of Prescription Drugs Then and Now

It’s been years since my daughter, Nikki, withdrew from prescription drugs for her depression, but yet she still experiences the symptoms it left behind.

Till this day, Nikki experiences lingering side effects we truly believe is the direct cause of being on antidepressants, anti-epileptic, atypical antipsychotics, and anticonvulsant drugs.

Memory loss and concentration difficulties are two of the major symptoms we can relate to these prescription drugs.

However, undoubtedly, the main repercussions is the impact those drugs had on Nikki’s life and our family.

Continuing with a journey via prescription drugs from my previous post, I want to proceed with sharing information with you.

Important information needed, so you can find your correct journey to wellness.

I begin by picking up where I left off with Step 3.

Step 3:

Be aware of what comes during prescription drugs.

While Nikki was being treated with prescription drugs for her depression, her diagnosis was continuously changing.

At first she went from depression to an unclassified mood disorder, to bipolar, to bipolar with depression, to rapid bipolar with depression, etc.

Little did we realize that some of the symptoms for this diagnosis were directly related to the prescription drugs she was taking.

It is important for you to always check potential side effects of the prescription drugs you are on.

And remember that side effects and warnings change.

Step 4:

Be aware of what comes after prescription drugs.

During Nikki’s treatment with prescription drugs, we often realized how negatively Nikki was looked at not only by her peers, but also by the medical community as a whole.

I remember numerous times doctors’ would look at Nikki as if her symptoms were all in her head.

As well as those unforgettable times sitting in the ER asking for help, only to be ignored.

Unfortunately, these reactions are the same even after the prescription drug treatment plan stopped.

Sadly, I witnessed first-hand how the medical community treated my daughter after reviewing her prescription drug history.

Always going first to mental illness rather than another medical condition. Brushing off her symptoms.

It took Nikki seven endocrinologists to be diagnosed with Graves’ disease even though my husband, her father, was diagnosed years prior.

What we have learned over the years, is to be persistent in getting an accurate diagnosis as well as the proper medical treatment you deserve.

If you feel something is medically wrong, never stop pursuing it.

Not every diagnosis is clear cut.

Not every medical condition is easy to diagnosis.

Always remember, that side effects after withdrawing from a prescription drug can stay with you.

Step 5:

Be aware of everything

My family has learned to look and analyize everything that is around us.

With Nikki’s awareness to her sensitivities, we have realized among many, many other things, that food can trigger an unusual high mood.

And with that, we realized that what goes up that fast must come down even more.

With the legalization of marijuana, the smell has become hard to avoid.

People with chemical sensitivities, may be more affected than others.

Nikki had reactions from the smell of marijuana ranging from an extremely high sensation to actual vomiting.

Animals also can have a negative reaction just from being near the smell of marijuana.

We are personally aware of a dog that had to be taken to the vet, because of sudden illness.

Ruling out potential things, the vet came to the only conclusion it was a reaction from the neighbor’s marijuana.

Another animal chemical sensitivity was my dog hallucinating from sticking his head in a salvia plant to get his toy.

This lasted for hours with remanence of it lasting for days.

I mention these animals and these reactions, because animals can’t lie.

They show signs that are true without any prenotions to what is going on.

So, we believe what is happening is the truth.

Why can’t we do the same in people.
