Mom's Story:
Journey to Wellness (Part 3)
July 7, 2023 by Nikki and Anne Heart
Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following story through Mom’s experience.
Years on Prescription Drugs
After seven unsuccessful years on a prescription drug treatment plan, Nikki began her journey to wellness with a different approach.
In the course of these seven years, I felt helpless while Nikki suffered from an inappropriate treatment plan.
We were convinced by Nikki doctor(s) that prescription drugs were needed for her wellbeing.
And also believed the diagnosis the doctor(s) gave to her was accurate.
Throughout this time, my daughter somehow managed to graduate from college with a degree in psychology and immediately began working in the field.
It was at this time when Nikki recognized something was wrong with her treatment plan.
How Nikki started her wellness journey
My daughter became aware that her current treatment plan was the wrong one and causing her more harm than good.
She questioned her doctor and wanted to withdraw from the prescription drugs.
Her doctor still insisted she needed a medication treatment plan, even though Nikki was physically and mentally deteriorating.
It was at this time, she started to develop a plan for herself beginning with withdrawing from the drugs.
It took over a year for the initial withdrawal from the actual drugs and several more years of physical and mental lingering effects from the drugs to dissipate.
During this time, my daughter realized that recognizing and to be self-aware was key to her path to wellness.
Because of this, Nikki received the correct diagnosis of Graves’ disease, a glutamate problem, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Nikki experienced many negative effects while being on a prescription drug treatment plan.
When she was on prescription drugs, she mostly was in a high, drugged, and unnatural state.
A state which caused her to dress and act the way she wouldn’t normally.
Most of these years Nikki has no memories of and other memories she would like to forget.
Her biggest hardship to overcome is the realization of how many years were taken away from her.
Years that Nikki went from being a teenage girl to an adult woman.
Nikki uses the concept to live in the present to help move forward.
And even though it is difficult not to look back, it is a useful tool. A good technique but needs continuous reinforcement to help.
Helpful techniques for a wellness plan
There are many other wellness techniques besides living in the present.
Nikki lives with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
A program that is widely used today is Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
CBT is most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression as well as OCD.
Even though Nikki realized that a complete CBT program is not for her, she has taken some parts of this therapy program and tries to incorporate it into her life.
My husband has participated in a mindfulness program. He doesn’t utilize the whole program, but like Nikki has taken ideas and incorporate them into his life.
Meditation can be used as a simple technique to relax, unwind or in the case of negative thoughts try to move them away.
My sister recently told me a story of how she relaxes and unwinds.
She goes to the local beach and just sits in her car looking at the water.
When she is finished, whether a half hour or an hour, she feels more relaxed and more at peace with all negativities that may be surrounding her at the time.
This is her form of meditation.
A self-help technique can be as simple as my sister’s or more complex as a complete meditation program.
It can encompass an entire self-help program or just bits and pieces that work for you.
The key is that it helps with the goal you want to achieve.
With the end result being, living a happy and healthier lifestyle.
