*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through Nikki’s eyes.

Nikki’s Story:  Journey through Levothyroxine

By the time I started my journey through Levothyroxine, I was already on years of mental health prescription medication and withdrawal from them.

It was soon after withdrawing from my last drug, I began experiencing shooting pains throughout my body. I had difficulty slowing down and sleeping as well as having extreme irritability and excessive hunger.

At one point my neck became so swollen, I was unable to swallow food.

Through a blood test from my primary care doctor, I discovered I had hyperthyroidism.

I have found that most people and doctors believe that thyroid disease is easy to treat. Unfortunately, from my experience, regulating my thyroid levels has been a difficult challenge.

First, I had difficulty in finding an endocrinologist who would treat my hyperthyroidism due to my past prescription drug history.

Second, when I finally had my thyroid ablated, the doctor was unwilling to except that I couldn’t take Synthroid® in a higher dosage without reactions.

At the time, I wasn’t fully aware of my sensitivities to preservatives and other ingredients in medications. And unfortunately, no endocrinologist nor doctor was open to listening to these sensitivities.

Awareness to Different Levothyroxine Brands

After several endocrinologists, still no one listened nor believed I was unable to increase my dosage. The same prescription was given time and time again.

During a visit with an endocrinologist, he stated without a higher dose of Levothyroxine I would die.

For months I was prescribed different brand names of Levothyroxine without any progress. My parents took it upon themselves to research thyroid medications for those with sensitivities and found Tirosint®. It truly wasn’t a difficult task.

Sadly however, even after seeing several endocrinologists, not one ever suggested Tirosint®.

When I suggested Tirosint® to my current endocrinologist, she looked at me as though she wasn’t familiar with it and was hesitant in prescribing it.

Still today I face challenges in regulating my thyroid levels, but Tirosint® has helped me do this. Tirosint® does not contain sugar, dyes, gluten, alcohol, lactose, among other ingredients other levothyroxine brands contain.

Once again, awareness that everyone is different is needed.

Even when treating thyroid disease.
