Mom’s Story: Journey to Learning

Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through mom’s eyes.

Journey

Discovering what’s right for your healthcare

Deciding whether or not to take a prescription drug should not be an easy decision.

Of course, at times there may be an emergency situation when a drug will save your life.

But at other times, evaluating all the pros and cons of a prescription drug is very important to your wellbeing.

I have learned over the years through Nikki’s journey as well as my own, that wellness is not always as simple as taking a pill. That all factors need to be carefully looked at.

This week I continue by bringing awareness to some of these factors. To help you discover your correct healthcare journey.

Learning Through Our Journey

In hindsight of Nikki’s seven-year journey on prescription drugs, I have learned to question all drug prescriptions.

I find myself questioning a simple change in my asthma medication, because I now know that nothing is simple when it comes to prescription drugs.

My new found awareness has brought me the knowledge that a change means stopping a drug to start a new one.

And that means withdrawal from the old drug can occur.

Unfortunately, most healthcare providers don’t discuss this with you, since they feel it is just a replacement drug.

Change of prescription drugs sometimes is necessary. What is also necessary is the discussion regarding all aspects of the drug change.

When should you decide what is right or wrong for you?

There is no simple answer nor should it be when it comes to taking a prescription drug or not.

When I recently had total hip replacement surgery, I questioned the surgeon how long the recuperation period would be and how severe the pain would be during this period.

Based on my personal experience with medication and surgery pain, I informed the doctor I would not need anything strong for the pain.

Without my knowledge, he put a prescription in for oxycodone anyhow. I never did fill the prescription.

So, why did he put in the prescription?

What would have happened if I did take it?

Would I have had withdrawals? It was never discussed with me.

Could I have become addicted? I don’t believe so, but how would I actually know for sure.

This should have been discussed with me but wasn’t.

Millions of people suffer from addiction, because they didn’t realize they would. They never questioned nor were they informed.

No one knows what the consequences of taking a prescription drug could be.

  • Can you have hidden sensitivities to the ingredients? Yes, it is possible.
  • Can you experience withdrawals even though you are told you won’t? Yes, it can happen.
  • Can you have unpredictable long term negative effects? Yes, my daughter lives with them everyday.

The key is to look at all your options for a treatment plan to determine which is right for you.

Other options could be:

  • Diet change, such as eating organic.
  • Change in your lifestyle, if possible.
  • Practicing techniques, such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, etc.
  • Alternative treatment programs such as CBT or DBT.

If your healthcare provider is only giving you one option, a prescription drug treatment plan, maybe it’s time to look into other options.

Just a thought!

The goal is always to help live a happy and healthier lifestyle for YOU or a loved one!
