Wellness ♥ Mom’s Story
Getting through Another Year of Holidays
November 28, 2024 by Nikki and Anne Heart ♥ Mom’s Story: Journey through The Holidays
Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through Mom’s eyes.
Holiday season may be a difficult time of the year
For some, extra shopping, cooking, cleaning and planning can be too much at times.
While others are overwhelmed by the feeling of loneliness and depression.
I also know all too well the feeling of both. Experiencing years of planning for multiple family gatherings to no real plans at all.
Things change over the years, and sometimes you don’t realize how much until it hits during the holiday season.
When struggling with mental wellness, the holidays can be extremely depressing for some.
How can you prepare?
- Take time for yourself
- Nothing has to be perfect
- It’s ok not to do everything
- Ask for help if needed
- Do the most important things first
- If you get to the others things, it is an added bonus
What if you are alone?
The loss of those close to you becomes more apparent during the holiday season.
Many times loss is due to death. But other ways may be even more difficult. Realizing that people close to you have left because of lack of understanding to what you go through.
Whatever the reason is, it is still hard to escape the feeling of loneliness around the holidays when you don’t have anyone to share it with.
Remember, you are special. It’s time to do something for yourself:
- Treat yourself to something special. It doesn’t have to be a big thing or an expensive item.
- Go to a free animal nature preserve, if one is around you.
- Take a walk in a park or by the water.
- Seeing a movie can be entertaining. Movie theaters offer special attractions for concerts, operas and even Broadway shows. Early performances can be cheaper than later times.
- Having a special desert.
- Cooking something different for yourself that you haven’t had in a while.
- Volunteering can help you to be around people and make you feel better. Animal rescues can be a good source for this.
- Work on a craft project, maybe knitting, painting, drawing. It doesn’t matter if you are good or not.
Everyone deserves a hug…
and so do YOU!
