Mental Health ♥ Mom’s Story
Facing Loneliness
December 14, 2023 by Nikki and Anne Heart ♥Mom’s Story: Journey through Loneliness
Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following journey through Mom’s eyes.
The Loneliness Associated with Mental Illness
Loneliness tends to be a big part of mental illness.
I have and still do witness this firsthand through my daughter Nikki.
At times Nikki’s journey to wellness took her through a dark path. Mainly due to the drugs she was prescribed which caused her to be in severe pain and unwell most of the time. The drugs also changed Nikki to the point she was no longer herself and at times acted differently than she would normally.
During this time, Nikki tried to be open about what she was going through. Looking for the support she needed from family and friends.
Unfortunately, close friends and even some family members chose to disassociate themselves from Nikki.
Sadly to say, this is not uncommon for people struggling with mental illness.
One of the main reasons people step away is the lack of understanding regarding mental health issues.
But another reason regrettably is that we live in a society that believes everyone needs to surround themselves with those who are positive — the popular one, the life of the party.
Which is all well and good up to a point.
However, what about those who at the moment in their lives, can’t get to the positive? Can’t see the world as the glass is half full? Aren’t popular, outspoken, nor the life of the party?
These are the people who need us the most. No matter how hard it is, they may need someone to bring that positive to them.
Hopefully one day, they can bring a positive to someone else in need of help.
Coping with loneliness can be difficult.
So FIRST, it is important to have an understanding of what a person is going through and not back away from it.
Understand that many people struggle daily with mental illness.
For some it is easy just to shake it off. Or even to get out of bed.
But the reality for many, is it isn’t that simple.
Real pain comes with mental illness.
Most of the time people who struggle from mental illness
- depression,
- negative thoughts,
- anxiety,
- obsessive-compulsive disorder
- suicidal thinking…
live with a life-long commitment to obtain wellness.
SECOND, realize everyone is different.
It’s time to truly believe this.
- Not everyone can walk away from a situation and not have it not affect them.
- Not everyone can be the life of the party.
- Not everyone can have the confidence they need.
- Not everyone can have that great career others believe should be.
Third, and most important.
- Acknowledge the little things.
- Don’t back away from those who need help the most.
- Do what you can for yourself and for someone else — no matter how small it is.
A few simple tips that may help with loneliness:
- Go for a walk in a public place around people.
- Sit somewhere that can be entertaining, possibly a zoo.
- Participate in a charity walk/run. When walking in a group, people tend to talk with everyone. A random conversation with a stranger may be the thing you need.
- If you work alone, maybe you can take your work to the library, bookstore or somewhere around people so you are not alone.
- Watch fun movies or television shows, nothing depressing but light and uplifting.
- Go to free events and sit near people that seem sociable. No need to answer questions about yourself.
- It may be difficult for you as it is for many, but learn to avoid conversations you don’t want to have.
- Do something that makes you feel good no matter how small such as go for a swim, fly a kite, make a puzzle.
- Join a local group possibly chess club, pickleball, book club, mahjong group, painting group, senior citizen group, goat yoga, photography group or class.
Realizing these things seem simple. Whatever helps and you are capable of doing, give it a try. You never know. The slightest amount of relief is still relief.
