DETERMINING THE CORRECT TREATMENT PLAN

By Nikki and Anne Heart ♥ April 3, 2025

*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.

Over the years, my daughter has sought help for her mental health, but unfortunately, most of the time, the suggested treatment plan has been centered around medication.

For my daughter, this type of plan has proven not to be effective. In fact, it has proven to be detrimental to her health.

With that said, I’ve come to realize that a treatment plan may be better when tailored to an individual’s needs. Frequently, a combination of different approaches proves most effective in developing a sustainable, lifelong wellness plan.

Treatment for You

How to determine the correct treatment plan for you

While my daughter Nikki’s experience with a prescription drug treatment program may not be universal, it’s important to explore and integrate other treatment options into the overall plan.

To determine the correct treatment plan for your mental health, it is important to look at the whole picture.

First, recognize possible causes for your unwellness

  • Health related problem such as a thyroid condition
  • Chemical allergy such as an reaction to mercury
  • Chemical sensitivities, such as a reaction to smell
  • Loss of a job, loved one, etc.
  • Financial situation
  • Alcohol and drug abuse

Second, learn about all appropriate treatment plans

Everyone is different. Every situation is unique to the individual. Therefore, a correct treatment plan takes the whole picture into account.

Third, a correct treatment plan should consist of a self-care plan

Whether you choose a medication treatment plan or not, developing a self-care program for yourself is important for overall wellness.

Self-care can include simple things like:

  • taking a walk in nature
  • enjoying a view out your window
  • mindfulness techniques
  • journaling
  • hobby
  • exercise
  • healthy diet
  • limiting alcohol and recreational drug consumption
  • breathing exercises
  • yoga
  • putting technology away
  • staying off social media
  • something enjoyable for yourself

Balancing your lifestyle is important when determining a correct treatment plan

Choose a plan that’s right for you. It may include:

  • general counseling
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP)
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
  • mindfulness based therapies
  • medication

Most important: It should always include a self-care plan.

From personal experience

Before committing to a program, thoroughly research its approach and methods. Many programs focus on teaching specific techniques tailored to their framework, but these techniques may not always align with your individual needs or circumstances.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has shown to be effective for many individuals. However, for those experiencing intense negative thoughts—like my daughter—not all aspects of its guidance may prove beneficial. In such cases, exploring a combination of programs might provide more comprehensive support.

It’s essential to evaluate whether a program addresses multiple mental health challenges that may be influencing you, and whether it considers your unique situation holistically.
