Nikki’s Story:

Journey through Celexa

In early spring of 2013, I was prescribed a new drug for my treatment plan, Celexa.

After seeking out a different health care practioner, one that I felt had the qualifications to help me, I had a newfound hope in obtaining a treatment plan that would finally work.

For this reason, I accepted her opinion to continue with a drug treatment plan.

It was at this time I discussed the three drugs I was currently on. She advised me to continue with them, adding Celexa as the fourth drug in my treatment plan.

My initial dose of Celexa, was a 10mg pill which I was instructed to cut in half.

Within a couple of days, I became very ill with stomach pains and a feeling that my throat was closing after taking the pill.

I was immediately advised by my new health care practioner to stop taking Celexa.

However, after ten days with no relief, I was once again advised to go back on Celexa. This time I was instructed to take a quarter of the pill.

Following only two days and feeling increasing ill, I was once again advised to stop Celexa entirely.

Subsequently, my withdrawal from Celexa stopped after two weeks, but my overall wellness was still poor.

So, once again I was prescribed a new drug, Effexer.

Tips for Awareness Regarding Your Prescription Treatment Plan:
Number 1:
Being on multiple prescription drugs at one time, no one took into consideration the combination of drugs.

Even if the prescribed drug can be taken with another one, together they may have a different effect in your body.

  • When adding a new prescription to existing drug(s), look for any interactions
  • Different combination of drugs may have a different outcomes
Number 2:

My health care provider told me to cut Celexa in half at first. After a reaction, I was told to again cut the tablet, but this time take only a quarter of the pill.

  • Research if you can actually cut a pill. Even though a pill is scored, cutting or altering may not be recommended.
  • Question cutting a pill smaller than half. The score line normally is in the middle.
Number 3:

If you are having severe reactions to the prescription drugs, question why.

  • Do you have a chemical sensitivity to possible preservations or artificial ingredients?
  • Do you have any hidden illness such as thyroid disease or a gluten problem?
