General information regarding bottled water

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the safety of bottled water in the United States.
  • FDA bases its bottled water standards on the safe drinking water rules for tap water.
  • FDA requires bottled water companies to: Protect bottled water sources from germs and chemicals.
  • The United States has rules in place to protect commercial bottled water.
  • Bottled water comes from a variety of sources, including many of the same sources as tap water. 

Are there preservatives in bottle water?

  • In general, there are no preservatives in bottle water.
  • However, while not technically preservatives, some bottled water may have trace minerals like magnesium or potassium added back (additives) for taste.
  • Also, chlorine and ozone are used in bottled water.

Potential Health Risks

  • Contamination from harmful germs or chemicals can make you sick
  • Symptoms of sickness range from mild to severe depending on the type of contamination
  • Some bottled waters testing positive for heavy metals, PFAS, and other contaminants
  • Bottle water packed with nanoplastics

  • Don’t let plastic bottles get too hot
  • Look for purified water which typically means water went through some sort of filtration

New findings regarding microplastics

A new study suggest that an average brain may contain plastic the size of a spoon.

The number of tiny bits of plastic found in human brains increased dramatically between 2016 and 2024, with the highest amounts found in the brains of people who had dementia.
