Recently I became aware of the drug Tianeptine, which is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Unfortunately, my discovery lead me to the realization that even though it does not have any approval for medical use, it is still being marketed and used for medical use.
So, how can this be?
Let’s delve into the details of the use.
How is Tianeptine marketed for medical use?
Simple, companies illegally market and sell products containing Tianeptine.
And the scary thing is, the consumer may not even be aware of it in the product they are buying or actually know what Tianeptine is.
Often sold online and convenience stores, Tianeptine is manufactured in dietary supplements and food additives as a cognitive enhancer.
Unfortunately, it is in products with limited FDA regulation.
Tianeptine is not a dietary ingredient.
Again, Tianeptine has no U.S. FDA approval for medical use.
Tianeptine is an antidepressant medication that is not approved for use in the United States for any medical use.
Other countries have approved Tianeptine to treat depression and anxiety with strict regulations on how it is prescribed and dispensed. It also has a warning for possible addiction.
Why isn’t it U.S. FDA approved?
Tianeptine isn’t an opioid, but in high dosages can have opioid effects
Dangerous drops in blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate can occur
Brain, heart and digestive function can be negatively affected
Substance use disorder can occur
Tianeptine can have serious harmful effects.
The scariest thing is a person taking a product with Tianeptine, probably has no knowledge of its potency and not aware of its harmful side effects.
In reality, it can lead to:
Substance abuse
Withdrawal symptoms
Coma
Agitation
Drowsiness
Confusion
Sweating
Rapid heartbeat
Blood pressure change
Nausea
Vomiting
Breathing problems
And even death
Some of these may not seem serious but can be due to lack of awareness of drug.
Also, a health care provider won’t know how to treat these symptoms without the awareness of the drug or the potency of the drug.
Remember, the key to wellness is awareness and this is especially important when it comes to drugs such as Tianeptine.
