Let’s start by identifying what emerging drugs are.
Emerging drugs are mind-altering substances. These substances include designer drugs and new psychoactive substances.
These new psychoactive substances are described as lab-made compounds. They can include drugs created by pharmaceutical companies or researchers not intended for distribution to the public.
New psychoactive substances belong to a number of drug classes:
Synthetic opiods
Synthetic cannabinoids
Synthetic cathinones
Synthetic benzodiazapines
Emerging drugs have become more and more popular in recent years.
They can be sold in many different places including the drug markets, convenience stores and online.
Sadly, they have been created to mimic the effects of drugs under the Controlled Substances Act.
People seek out these drugs for recreational use as well as to self-medicate themselves.
Quite frequently, these substances are added to other drugs without a buyer knowing.
To say the least, emerging drugs can be very harmful and deadly.
Breaking down emerging drugs further
First, Nitazenes:
Nitazenes are in a class of lab-made (synthetic) opiods.
A potent pain reliever that was never marketed.
Many nitazenes are listed as Schedule 1 drugs under the Controlled Substances Act
Nitazenes may be even more powerful than fentanyl
Second, Tianeptine:
Tianeptine is an antidepressant medication that is not approved in the United States
Research has shown that it can be put into dietary supplements and sold online and in stores
Even though not an opioid, in high dosages can mimic opioid-like effects
Negative effects can be blood pressure heart rate and breathing
Other effects include brain, heart and digestive function
It can cause substance use disorders
Withdrawal can be severe
What are the overall effects of emerging drugs?
The effects of emerging drugs can be serious.
These drugs may contain unknown ingredients. Ingredients a person may not be aware they are taking.
And because of not knowing exactly what is being taken, the lack of knowledge to how powerful or potent the drug will be, cannot be determined.
With this said, these drugs can cause:
Unpredictable outcomes
Unwanted effects
Delay in treatment of people having a negative experience with the substance
Possibly long-term consequences and even death
