Mom's Story:
Journey via Prescription Drugs
July 28, 2023 by Nikki and Anne Heart
Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following story through Mom’s experience.
Nikki’s cry for help!
My daughter’s journey through prescription drugs came on too fast to consider all the pros and cons before turning to a medication treatment plan.
Nikki at that time desperately reached out for help for the pain of depression she was experiencing.
Pain, I didn’t know how to help her with.
So, I quickly and eagerly seized the advice the expert gave to me, my husband and Nikki.
The same advice I refused to consider for years.
This time, unfortunately, I decided to put my trust in the expert guidance and advised Nikki to follow the advice given.
Believing the situation now needed an immediate, fast acting treatment plan.
The treatment offered was a prescription drug plan.
I like most people was raised to put trust in the advice given to me by a medical professional.
To believe that someone who is educated, experienced and highly rated in a particular medical field has more knowledge than I do.
And I should have the confidence in their expert opinion even though I may disagree.
I now know how wrong this trust, belief, and confidence was.
If I could turn back time, I would.
But I can’t.
Instead, I can share the information we have learned, to stop you from making the same mistakes.
Step 1:
Be aware of what is going on by recognizing all warning signs.
During my daughter’s journey through prescription drugs, she was so convinced the treatment she was receiving was the right treatment.
Even though she felt unwell most of the time, she also trusted the professional.
She believed the diagnosis was accurate.
That the help they were providing was needed.
Nikki was persuaded her future wellness was dependent on finding the right drug mix.
Even though I did question her prescribed medication, I didn’t look close enough to recognize my daughter was unable to think for herself.
Step 2:
Become the expert in the treatment you or someone you want to help is receiving.
During my daughter’s treatment, the professional often shut me out.
Convincing my daughter that she was an adult and should be in charge of her own treatment.
What I didn’t realize is my daughter needed someone to know the pros and cons of the treatment.
With the prescription drugs causing memory loss and concentration difficulties during periods of time, she wasn’t able to think clearly and interpret things.
Never mind taking charge of her wellbeing.
And even though I asked questions regarding different medications, the reality was I didn’t know the right questions to ask.
I relied too heavily on my daughter.
Nikki has always been smart and observant, but the drugs altered her thinking in ways I didn’t fully understand and neither did she.
All Nikki wanted was to get better and she longed for a healthier lifestyle.
She kept hoping what the professionals were telling her was correct.
Until there was no longer hope and the trust was gone.
With the support of myself and my husband, Nikki took charge of her own wellness path.
We learned what questions to ask, about medications, side effects, chemical and food sensitivities.
And we never stop learning.
As we move forward in our journey, I want to stress that it is never too late to change your journey.
And find the correct path.
My story of a Journey via Prescription Drugs continues.
