Starting a New Medication
By Nikki and Anne Heart ♥ Ocotber 31, 2024
*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.
During the years my daughter was on a prescription drug treatment program, she didn’t receive all the needed information when starting a new medication.
What she normally received was basic. Not information that related to her as an individual. And not all important facts.
We learned over the years to always ask the healthcare prescriber questions regarding the drug they were prescribing.
We also learned to double check the information given. Because unfortunately we found that a lack of information was sometimes provided, or even inaccurate information was given to us.
Things to know before starting a new medication
- Know if there are any food or drinks that should be avoided. Licorice and grapefruit should be avoided when beginning a new medication and possible always
- Question what other drugs should not be taken with the new medication
- Learn if you can take vitamins and/or supplements with the new medication
- Ask what you should do if you miss a dose
- Be informed regarding side effects
- Understand about withdrawals
- Research the medication ingredients especially if you have any sensitivities to dyes, preservatives, etc.
- Ask about FDA approval of the medication or is it being used off label
- How long has the medication been on the market
- Be aware of any precautions
- Can the medication lead to addiction, increased depression, suicidal thoughts, unwanted thoughts or unwanted behaviors
