Awareness about Psychedelic and Dissociative Drugs

Let’s be frank. My knowledge with Psychedelic and Dissociative Drugs was limited to non-existing until recently.

Yes, I was aware of the drugs in this category. And of course, growing up in the sixties and seventies, I have basic knowledge of their use.

But my naivety begins with how they are currently being used and the promotion of this use.

Recognizing a Psychedelic and Dissociative Culture

Over the past few years, I have seen television shows depicting the use of psychedelic drugs as treatment plans for various mental health issues.

I have heard celebrities openly discuss the use of magic mushrooms and other psychedelic and dissociative drugs for their mental health therapy.

And lately, I have people commenting on my Facebook posts regarding shrooms and microdosing and where someone can get the best in this category of drugs.

This in itself is a little mind altering, since our whole basis of Symptoms of a Drug Prescription is to pursue a drug alternative treatment plan, if possible, before drugs.

Researching Psychedelic and Dissociative Drugs in Our Environment

In general…

  • Psychedelic Drugs primarily influence the way the brain processes the chemical serotonin. It can bring on vivid visions and may affect a person’s sense of self.
  • Dissociative Drugs primarily affect how the brain processes the chemical glutamate. Some people feel disconnected from their body and environment when using these drugs.

Reported uses for Psychedelic and Dissociative drugs are:

  • Mind and mood altering affects
  • Recreation
  • Emotional and spiritual experience
  • Hope to improve mental health, well-being and the ease of pain or stress

Is Microdosing of Psychedelic or Dissociative drugs legal? This is a very complex issue varying from state to state as well as federal law.  General facts at the time of this post are:

  • The use, sale and possession in the United States is illegal under federal law
  • Some states have decriminalized psilocybin
  • States have approved measures or working on measures to both decriminalize psilocybin and legalize supervised use
  • State laws and federal laws can change. Be aware of the laws surrounding microdosing

Effects of taking Psychedelic and Dissociative drugs can include:

Learning about Psychedelic and Dissociative Drugs

The NIDA supports and conducts research on these drugs.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to predict how a person will react to a Psychedelic or Dissociative drug due to the many factors involved in the use of these drugs such as:

  • how it is used
  • individual biology
  • age
  • sex
  • personality
  • mood
  • expectations
  • mindset
  • environment
  • combination of substances
  • prescription medications

The key to your well-being is always to question.

  1. Be aware of how things affect you.
  2. Do your research before starting any mental health treatment plan.
  3. Recognize that there are no quick fixes.
  4. And most importantly, learn everything you can about yourself to determine what treatment plan is right for you.
