Trust Yourself

*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.
For years my daughter sort out medical guidance regarding her unwellness. Unwellness which occurred primarily after eating or drinking even water. But rarely did any healthcare professional acknowledge or take seriously what she told them.
It was only after seeking treatment from and being tested by a certified nutritionist, her symptoms were acknowledged. A diet consisting primarily of organic and gluten free foods was recommended at this time. This diet at first seemed to improve my daughter’s physical and mental health, but there was something still wrong.
Continuing to find answers for her unwellness, my daughter visited various healthcare professionals. Needless to say, her symptoms were continuously brushed off. Sadly, at times, my daughter was blatantly told, “You can’t be allergic to everything,” with no explanation to what possibly can be causing her unwellness.
Ultimately, this statement turned out to be basically false.
With a newfound awareness of patch testing for chemical allergies, came the knowledge my daughter needed for her wellness.
Of course, my daughter and I were aware of patch testing. But the unfortunate reality was that whenever we mentioned testing for chemical sensitivities, the healthcare provider either performed a small skin test or stated they didn’t have testing for her symptoms.
Learning through someone who had gone through patch testing for their chemical sensitivities, convinced us to again reach out to yet another allergist.
At this appointment, the allergist listened to what my daughter was saying and ordered patch testing for 100 different chemicals.
The results confirmed she had allergies to three chemicals. These three chemicals are in most foods, medicines, pharmaceutical products, household products and many every day products used.
Even though my daughter has finally received an answer for the unwellness she has felt for years with each food she ate, each product she used, and each smell she inhaled, the reality again is no one believed her.
Years of healthcare professionals insinuating it was all in her head and not acknowledging the possibility of chemical allergies. Which sadly contributed to more years of misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment.
Trust yourself and what you are feeling. Even if no one else believes you.
- Analyze yourself
- Look at the food, medicines (both prescription and over the counter), supplements, vitamins and products you are using
- Learn about all the ingredients
- Try to determine if you are having an allergic reaction to preservatives, dyes, additives, etc.
- Know all the ingredients especially inactive ingredients
- Allergic reactions can be both physical and mental
- A reaction can occur when you ingest something, apply to your skin or inhaling a smell
- Chemicals may not cause a reaction quickly it may take time to build up into your system or it can be an immediate response
- Even though you have stopped all the known allergens, it probably will take time to leave your system, if at all
Patch testing is just one step to your wellness.
Nikki, my daughter, was tested for a hundred different chemicals out of thousands.
I recently compiled a list of ingredients for the food, products and medicines she uses. The list was over five pages long.
Can there be other things she is allergic too? Of course.
Yet this is the proof she needed to continue on the right path in hopes that other healthcare professionals will now listen.
One of the best practices I have learned to take charge of your wellness is to be aware and observe.
With that said, remember to have trust in yourself. You alone know your body and mind the best. Don’t ever forget that.
