PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

BY NIKKI AND ANNE HEART ♥  March 13, 2025

*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.

I frequently find myself contemplating how different my daughter’s life might have been had she never been prescribed medication for her mental health.

Regrettably, traveling back in time is not possible. However, we can still learn from our past.

I’ve learned a lot about my daughter’s prescription drug treatment plan. While not everyone will have the same experience as her, if you find similarities in your journey, this information might be helpful on your path to wellness.

First awareness:

Throughout her decade-long course of prescription drug treatment, the common phrase we often heard was, “Once we find the right cocktail, she will get better.”

Today, I realize how alarming this phrase should have been. But at that time, it was normal terminology in the healthcare community regarding mental health treatment.

Now I have become aware how particularly alarming it was since my daughter had openly informed her healthcare providers about her struggles with alcoholism.

Second awareness:

With each new medication prescribed, a newfound awareness began. The main awareness was how not to take the prescribed drug.

Time and time again, my daughter was told to cut a pill or open a capsule.

After researching, neither should have been done with her prescribed drugs.

Cutting a pill often does more harm than good. Even if a pill is scored, it doesn’t always mean it can be safely divided. The only reliable way to get accurate instructions is to contact the pharmaceutical company directly. The same caution applies to opening capsules.

Third awareness:

Blood work taken while on prescription drugs is not always accurate.

This was found true with my daughter’s thyroid. The prescribed lithium drug can alter the results of a thyroid blood test.

It was unfortunate that no healthcare provider ever informed my daughter of this.

After withdrawing from her prescribed drugs, my daughter was diagnosed with a hyperthyroid leading to a thyroid ablation. Hyperthyroidism is in my daughter’s family history.

Fourth awareness:

Before prescribing medication, the healthcare provider did not conduct any tests, including blood tests.

During her prescription drug treatment plan, her healthcare providers frequently noted her sensitivity, yet no testing was conducted.

It was years later when my daughter was finally tested and diagnosed with allergies to many substances, substances that are in medications, pharmaceutical products, food and drinks. Overall, products she used and consumed on a daily basis.

These allergens could have been and most likely were triggers for many of her physical and mental symptoms.

Today, there are numerous tests available to determine what may be causing issues in our bodies. Blood tests can identify food allergies and harmful chemical levels, such as mercury. Patch testing can detect various chemical allergens. All of these factors can potentially impact mental health.

Continuing awareness:

With daily struggles, my daughter continues to face the repercussions of her prescription drug treatment plan.

While not everyone will go through what Nikki has experienced, some people, unfortunately, will.

This post aims to raise your awareness of the various factors that can influence your wellness journey.

  • Learn to question everything about your health and treatment plan
  • Observe and research potential things that may be overlooked
  • Trust yourself and what is right for you

And remember, continuous awareness is crucial for your wellness journey.
