*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.

As the years go by, I wish for the negative effects of prescription drugs to leave my daughter forever.

Unfortunately, I come to the realization that may not happen in the near future.

What most people do not realize is that even though you stop a prescription drug, the negative effects may be long-term or even permanent.

However, this isn’t always recognized in the medical community.

The truth is that a prescription drug can alter a person physically and/or mentally.

Physical change is obvious, such as weight gain or weight loss, but a mental change isn’t as obvious.

Changes in personality can happen, such as increased mood swings, changes in thinking patterns, taste in clothing and other things.

A person that was once shy, may now become loud and aggressive. And someone who never had a fear of public speaking, may now have extreme anxiety in public places.

These changes may be noticeable and related to the drug, but what happens when the drug is stopped? Is it recognizable that it is a drug withdrawal? Or possibly a long-term negative effect of the drug?

Personality changes with a drug prescription can happen.

  • Stop and question if you feel different.
  • Many anti-depressants and other prescription medications can intensify depression, anxiety and stress.
  • Look for any warning signs of negative effects.
  • Notice different traits in someone near you on a prescription drug that they may not be aware of.
  • Drug withdrawals can happen with any drug no matter how long you have been taking it.
  • Note, that a withdrawal may not be obvious.
  • Remember, a prescription drug can make radical changes to someone. Know those signs.
