CHEMICALS IN OUR HOME

*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.

How often are we exposed to chemicals without knowledge?

I recently wrote about chemicals currently used in household and commercial products that can seriously affect our health. The FDA is acknowledging these chemicals as harmful and is currently in the process of banning the use of them.

But what about the other chemicals that are not being acknowledged.

Another recent experience I had is when my burner stopped working. Fortunately, I have a service contract with a company I have used for years.

They did come and fix the burner. However, this time when they repaired it, a strong chemical smell was left behind in my basement. Granted, it is an oil burner and not the cleanest fuel. And as in the past, an oil smell was left behind. This smell was different. It consumed my basement and entered the main part of the house. We immediately opened the basement windows and ran a strong powerful fan. Three days later, the smell was still strong. With past experience, I didn’t think this was normal and called the service company. They denied use of any chemicals.

So my thought is, what do they consider a chemical?

Exposure to chemicals in the home is not unusual.

One of the steps to try and stop this from happening again, was to have the company note on my file that no strong odor chemicals can be used.

Whether or not this will be taken seriously is yet to be seen.

Possible steps you can take:

  • Be aware that chemicals are in products and can affect our health
  • Whenever work is being done in the home, take precautions such as run purifiers, open windows and doors, have fans available
  • Notify company you have hired that someone in home has chemical sensitivities
  • Get all the facts about the products being used especially if VOCs can be in the products
