CHEMICAL SENSITIVITIES CAN AFFECT YOU

*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.

How chemicals can affect you without you knowing.

Chemicals are hidden in most products we use and buy, and they surround us.

Sometimes without our awareness, we are affected in a negative way.

My daughter, Nikki, is a person with chemical sensitivities.

Walking through the mall is challenging for her. Standing next to a person with perfume can affect her. And exposure to marijuana smells can severely disorient her.

Avoiding these chemicals as much as possible has become my daughter’s way of life.

Unfortunately, it can be nearly impossible to do.

VOCs (Volatile organic compounds) are in many products and can cause short or long-term adverse health effects. VOCs are chemicals that can evaporate in the air under normal indoor conditions.

These VOCs to my daughter are extremely dangerous causing her to have both mental and physical impairments, some lasting a short time. While long-term exposure can lead to a longer recovery period.

Awareness to chemical sensitivities

One of my daughter’s latest occurrences was when I purchased new rugs for my home. The rugs were small in scale. One was a runner for my main staircase and hallway. The other was for the basement staircase. The chemical fumes from the rugs overwhelmed her system. She became disoriented, confused, and extremely agitated.

Even though it was 30 degrees and windy outside, I had to open all doors and windows and run large fans to rid the house of the smell. Four days later, the smell was somewhat contained.

The adverse effect on her health was obvious. What about those who don’t have such obvious effects?

Is it still harmful?

What can you do if you have chemical sensitivities?

Awareness is key.

Without the awareness that my daughter was having a reaction to the rugs, it could have been seen as a mental health issue instead.

Some people are most likely treated for a mental health issue instead of an apparent chemical sensitivity. This is unfortunate.

Important factors regarding chemical sensitivities:

  • It is, therefore, important that you know your own body and reactions.
  • It is equally important that those around you are also aware.
  • Most importantly, realize that these reactions are real and not in the persons head.
